Johannesburg
City of trees:  the urban forest

  • Joburg is South Africa’s urban forest, with over 10-million trees throwing a colourful palette year round over hard building edges.
  • Joburg at work
It’s all in a day’s work as city employees head out to fulfil their varied duties, from making sure residents have water and electricity; patrolling the streets; looking after zoo animals and adding more trees for Joburg’s greening programme.
  • People of the city
Joburg is made up of an eclectic and colourful mix of cultures, ethnic groups and nations, a place where black and white live side by side in harmony.
  • Public Art
Public art is a common and welcome sight across Joburg, portraying the city’s unique culture, diverse communities and rich history, be it the magnificent Firewalker in Newtown or the sandblasted designs on all the Rea Vaya stations.  Look out for it on city streets and corners, public squares and even on lampposts.
  • Soweto: township with many layers
Relative affluence and extreme poverty shows itself in varied dwelling types and modes of transport in South Africa’s biggest township; a historic, multi-layered place drenched in African warmth and hospitality.
  • Inner city
Business-like by day, vibrant by night the inner city is not just the historical centre of Johannesburg but considered to be the symbolic, economic and cultural heart of the city.
